1888 Goodwin ChampionsGoodwin & Co. of New York released this card set in 1888. It featured 'champions' from various athletic competitions, including baseball, bicycling, weightlifting, billiards, pugilism, etc. There were 50 cards total in the set, of which 8 were baseball-related. The cards measured 1-1/2" x2-5/8".
Card fronts featured a color portrait of the athlete, with his name and position (if on a team) in script near the top, with advertising for Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cigarettes at the bottom. Card backs listed the various athletes comprising the series.
These cards were inserted into packs of Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cigarettes. This is considered one of the most attractive tobacco card sets due to the care with which the images were created and reproduced.
