1909 Philadelphia Caramel

The Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey, produced this small set of baseball cards in 1909. There were 25 numbered cards in this set, each measuring 1-1/2"x2-5/8".

The card fronts featured a piece of colored artwork of the player, with his last name and team within the white border at the bottom. Card backs listed all of the cards in the series, with a brief advertisement for the company at the bottom.

This set is similar to other tobacco and candy card series of the time. A number of blank-backed cards on thinner cardboard similar to this set is known to exist; these seem to have been cut from a baseball-themed notebook cover sold about the same time, and command about one-quarter to one-half the price of the regular cards.

The American Card Catalog designation for this series is E95.
