1933 Goudey Baseball Cards
In 1933 Goudey released their first full baseball card set. This was in addition to their Sport Kings set released the same year, which featured athletes from 18 different sports. The American Card Catalog number for this set is R319.
The set numbers 239 cards total, each measuring 2-3/8"x2-7/8".
Each card carries a color photo reproduction of the player, his name, and the words BIG LEAGUE CHEWING GUM in bold along the bottom. Card backs feature a short summary of the player's career.
One card in the set, #106 Napoleon Lajoie, is listed as part of this set even though it was not actually released until a year after the other cards; its front is designed as if it were part of the 1934 Goudey set, but the back resembles the 1933 card backs. It is particularly scarce and thus carries a high collector value, but this card value is not counted in the set total price.
There are also a handful of card variations and what are believed to be 'proof' cards, and these are not counted in the set price, either.
Prominent players in this set include Lajoie, Babe Ruth, Jimmy Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, and Melvin Ott.
