1949 Bowman Baseball Cards

1949 Bowman baseball The 1949 Bowman baseball card set more resembled what is generally thought of as a modern baseball card issue, mainly owing to the fact that its size increased 240, and the cards generally had a more professional look to them. The cards in this seat measured 2-1/16"x2-1/2".

The card fronts were tinted player photographs against a solid color background. Over roughly half of these (cards beginning with #109), a strip with the player's name was superimposed over the photo.

Card backs again held the card number, player name & basic info, and a paragraph-length bio. (Note: on some cards, the player's name on back was printed as a signature.) Below this was an advertisement for some novelty for kids to send away for, such as a plastic bank, ring, game, etc.

There are numerous variations in this set, i.e., card fronts with different information on the back, etc.

Some cards in this set can be found printed on either white or gray cardboard.

Prominent players in this set include: Stan Musial, Bob Feller, Warren Spahn, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson (rookie), Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges, and Satchell Paige.
