1960 Fleer Baseball Greats

In 1960 Fleer produced their followup to the successful Ted Williams baseball card set, with Baseball Greats. There were 79 cards in the set, each measuring the standard 2-1/2"x3-1/2".

1960 Fleer Baseball Greats The set basically consists of notable baseball players from the past (as the name implies), plus the addition of Ted Williams, with whom the company was apparently obsessed. (As this was his final season in the majors, perhaps they just wanted to get one more card out of him.)

The card fronts depicted a colorized photo of the player, inside color borders along the corners and bottom, which also contains the player's name; a thick white border surrounded the card's edges.

Card backs featured the card number in the Fleer 'crown' logo at the upper left with the series title BASEBALL GREATS along the top. Below this was a short paragraph about the player's career and his hitting or pitching career statistics.

The set was originally meant to have 80 cards, but the last card was never issued; its back carried info for Pepper Martin but another player's photo on the front. Known examples of the card do exist, but have been defaced by Fleer, or have been cut from a full printer's sheet.

The set price does not, of course, reflect the inclusion of any card #80.

Team Logo stickers were inserted in packs of this issue; they measured 2-1/2"x3". They can be distinguished from later years' stickers in that the front image had a blue background. Set price does not include stickers.

Notable players in this set include Ted Williams, Nap Lajoie, Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Bob Feller, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Jimmy Foxx, and Honus Wagner.
