1961 Fleer Baseball Greats

Fleer's 1960 baseball card set must have sold well, because they returned in 1961 with another set devoted to Baseball Greats. This series was nearly double the size of the previous, at 154 cards.

Card fronts depicted a distinctive red-white-and-blue design, with the player's colorized photo surrounded by stars, stripes, and a pennant shape at the bottom holding his name.

Card backs featured a wide orange banner at the top with the BASEBALL GREATS set name at the top, with the player's name and date of birth (and death, if applicable) below, and a cartoon image of a trophy at left. Below this was a paragraph about the player's career to the left, with career statistics to the right.

This set again contained team logo stickers inserted into each 5-cent pack; the 1961 stickers featured the logo against a white background, with blue ink used on the back.

Also inserted into packs were one of 48 World Champions pennant stickers, covering the years 1913 to 1960. These are not included in the total set price.

Prominent players in this set included Ty Cobb, Bob Feller, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Cy Young, and (again) Ted Williams.
