1964 Topps Baseball Cards
The 1964 Topps baseball card set contained 587 cards, and continued the company's commitment to the now-standardized 2-1/2"x3-1/2" size. This year's set is considered one of the cleanest designs Topps ever came up with for their baseball sets.
Card fronts feature a large player photograph dominating the center of the card, with the team name prominently displayed at top, and a color band at the bottom displaying the player name and position.
This year's card backs contained the usual statistics, but also featured a quiz question; the answer to the question was hidden beneath a white square, which collectors had to rub off with a coin. Naturally, cards with the white square rubbed off cannot be considered anywhere near 'mint' and must be priced accordingly.
The 1964 set contained a handful of specialty cards, including World Series highlights, statistical leaders, and team-by-team rookie cards.
One particular specialty card from this set is a memorial card devoted to Ken Hubbs, who was killed in an air accident.
Prominent players in this set include Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Pete Rose, Sandy Koufax, Roger Maris, Willie Mays, Lou Piniella (rookie), Hank Aaron, Whitey Ford, Bob Clemente, and Phil Niekro (rookie).
