1967 Topps Baseball
The 1967 Topps baseball card set finally broke the 600-card barrier with a total of 609 cards, the largest up to that time.
Card fronts featured an innovative (for the time) design in that practically the entire card front was a color photograph of the player, with his name, position, faux signature, and team name (in large colored lettering) superimposed over it. (Note: card #254, Milt Pappas, featured no signature on front.)
Card backs featured career statistics, a paragraph summarizing the player's career highlights, and one or two small cartoons. Card backs this year are also the first to be printed vertically.
Specialty cards include World Series highlights, statistical leaders, and team-specific rookie cards.
The high numbers (#534-609) of this set are considered rather difficult to find in relation to the other cards of the set, especially compared to the high-number cards of similar sets. Some of these, in turn, appear to have been short-printed and are thus even more scarce. Contrarily, some of the cards in the high numbers are considered to have been double-printed and are thus much more common.
There are a handful of error cards, which in subsequent printings were corrected. The error card prices are not included in the regular set total.
Prominent players in this set include Roger Maris, Pete Rose, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Palmer, Rod Carew (rookie), and Tom Seaver (rookie).
