1982 Fleer Baseball Cards
The 1982 Fleer baseball card set was not given the same welcome by collectors as their previous; one reason was that they were no longer the new kid on the block, and if they were to survive, they would be held to the same standards as Topps's (admittedly) high ones. There were again 660 cards in this set, printed on white card stock.
The card fronts featured a color player photo surrounded by a thin colored border, with a rounded block at the base containing the player's name, team, and position; the entire card front was surrounded by a white border along the edges.
Card backs were in a nice pastel blue, with the player's name, team, position, and batting average at the top; this was flanked by the card number in a circle to the left, and the team logo to the right. Below this was a yellow block containing the player's career statistics, and at the bottom was the player's basic biographical information.
Topps reiterated their legal position that they be the only baseball card manufacturer to issue gum with their cards, and as a result, this year's Fleer issue came with team logo stickers instead.
Note: There is a significantly-priced error card in this set, #576, John Littlefield: in the error he is shown pitching 'lefty.' This card is not reflected in the set price.
The Cal Ripken Jr. rookie card commands more than half of the total set price.
Prominent players in this set include Johnny Bench, Reggie Jackson, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken Jr. (rookie), Carl Yastrzemski, Pete Rose, and Mike Schmidt.
