Remco Movieland Drive-In
Remco came up with an ingenious twist on the filmstrip-projector toy in 1959, when they introduced their Movieland Drive-In Theater.
The toy basically consisted of a filmstrip projector (powered by two D batteries) and 4"x6" screen, but the entire thing was dressed up as a miniature drive-in movie. The projector was housed near the entrance, as part of the concessions building; there was a parking lot and miniature cars to park on it; there was even a marquee to hang Coming Attractions posters for the filmstrips that came with the toy. The child pulled a level to turn on the projector light, and slowly turned a knob to change the onscreen images.
The filmstrips featured popular licensed characters and TV shows of the time, including Captain Kangaroo, Heckle and Jeckle, Dinky Duck, Farmer Alfalfa, Mighty Mouse, and Have Gun Will Travel.
Although available for only a short time, this toy is fondly remembered by those who were kids at the time, and is a highly sought-after collectible.
And yes, that's Patty Duke in the commercial.
