James Bond Action Figure

Starting in 1964, the A.C. Gilbert Co. began manufacturing a doll devoted to the world's most famous secret agent, James Bond. The character had debuted in the 1962 film Dr. No and was a smashing success with audiences; new movies were coming out at the rate of about one a year and young fans were clamoring for toys devoted to the character.

James Bond action figure The Gilbert James Bond action figure stood 12" in height. Although not very maneuverable, the figure sported a spring-activated right hand that 'fired' a small plastic gun. The original figures came attired in a dark blue or black suit and tie.

In 1966-67, the Ideal Toy Company began manufacturing the figures (although the packaging still bore the Gilbert logo). The Ideal Bonds, however, were dressed in swim trunks and white T-shirt, and outfitted with diving gear (probably as a response to 1965's Thunderball).

Also released around 1965 was a doll devoted to Odd Job, the Korean assassin from the film Goldfinger. Two variations of the Odd Job action figure exist - one in a suit and tie, the other wearing a traditional Japanese karate outfit.
